An Interview with Meghan

An Interview with Meghan

Meghan Stout works for JPMorgan Chase in their headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. At JPMorgan Chase, Meghan works as a Marketing Campaign Manager and with that position she is “responsible for developing, executing, and managing multiple direct marketing campaigns to support key mortgage marketing initiatives”. Meghan went to school at Franklin University in Columbus where she got a dual bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Business Administration. She has been working JP Morgan Chase for three years and seven months giving her enough time with the company to hone in on what it takes to be successful in that position.

Pros and Cons

As a Marketing Campaign Manager, Meghan has several primary responsibilities that all relate back to her main job. She has to be able to “work across multi functional teams such as outside agencies on creative development and execution, list team to coordinate ChaseFronttargeting, analytics team to report campaign results and the print team for production of marketing materials” because in the end all those people contribute to the final product that is produced. For each project Meghan has to make sure everything is “on time and within budget parameters”. Even with all of her responsibilities, Meghan still very much enjoys what she does. She loves that her position allows her to “oversee a project from start to finish” while still having “a hand in the creative development of marketing pieces”. Meghan always thinks of herself as being a creative person, so she was happy when she realized that her job would still let her be involved in the creative pieces like “making sure copy and design align with the marketing strategy” because those are the types of things she gets the most enjoyment from. Looking to the future is very exciting for Meghan because she sees big changes coming within her field, mainly being technologically based. Right now Meghan mainly uses programs like Microsoft Word and Excel to carry out her duties, but she thinks “more companies will eventually provide project management software for use in managing marketing campaigns”. The technological updates could be helpful to Meghan in getting her projects done quicker and with more ease, so she is eager to see them as time goes on.

Of course no job is perfect and no one likes everything about their job and Meghan is no different. Since JPMorgan is such a large company, Meghan finds that there is a lot of bureaucracy to deal with when trying to get certain things done. A company like JPMorgan has very strong controls in place, which helps keep everything organized and running smoothly, but those controls “just make is harder to improve processes and be productive”. More specific to being a Marketing Campaign Manager, there is a high level of stress placed on Meghan because of all the responsibilities she has on a day-to-day basis. Her job requires her to “juggle multiple campaigns with a large number of deliverables all at once” and work hard to “hit tight deadlines”, which are both key contributors to the stress put on her.

Words of Wisdom

For someone looking to go into this type of field of work after school, Meghan has lots a wonderful advice. Having a degree in either marketing, communication, or business administration is really important because those types of degrees teach the type of knowledge that employers except from their employees right out of school. The most qualified people are ones that have “consumer marketing experience and excellent written and oral communication skills”, are able to “think strategically, but are willing to roll up their sleeves”, and have “strong relationship development and negotiating skills, so they are able to earn respect and trust among internal and external business partners”. The people who make the strong marketers are “very driven to succeed” and “have a good eye for detail and a creative flair”. For Meghan’s job specifically, a person “must possess a strong sense of urgency, be able to manage multiple projects at once, and be very organized”. Aside from all the things learned in school Meghan thinks it is important for young people to “take advantage of their immediate resources” because networking is a great way to find jobs and get started with life after-college.

If someone would want to work within the marketing field, but not be a Marketing Campaign Manager, there are still several jobs available to them that would still interest them. There are positions in marketing that include being a “copywriter, designer, production manager, and traffic manager”, which make up the lower level, Lifecycle-Marketing-for-Property-Management-Stages-and-Goalslower stress jobs. The higher-up marketing positions include being a “creative director or a marketing VP”. If the job of a Marketing Campaign Manager does peak someone’s interest, the position of “Campaign Manager and Project Manager are very versatile” and similar jobs can be found at almost every company because “every project needs someone who will lead a team to success”. Each of the various marketing positions have different salaries based on which level of work the position falls into. The more entry-level jobs have annual salaries ranging from $35-$50k while the middle-level positions range from $50-$80k. The top-level marketing positions have an annual pay of $80,000+ depending on how long the person has been there and the specific title that they hold. A company like JPMorgan does pay their employees on the higher end of the spectrum, but still remain pretty even to other companies around their same size.

Now that she has held her position for over three and half years, Meghan is able to reflect on how she felt when she first started compared to how she feels now. She wishes that when she first go the job she would have known that “the work never really stops” and that it is expected that she will “stay until the job is done”. When she first started the job she did not realize how important it is to understand marketing financials. For her job, Meghan must be able to “stay within budget” and “forecast” what the next budget might be based on the previous ones. Now that she knows everything she knows and had experienced all the key things her job entails, she still thinks it is challenging and stressful at times, but overall very much enjoys all the things she gets to do.

Origainlly Press Week

Origainlly Press Week

Badgley Mischka, Marc Jacobs, Micheal Kors, and Zac Posen are all names that often come to mind when someone thinks of American designers. Thanks to Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, both known and on-the-rise designers are able to showcase their newest collections. New York Fashion Week is held twice a year in February and September with shows in Lincoln Center. These seven days only happen twice a year and are the most important days for fashion fanatics, and would not exist without Eleanor Lambert. Lambert saw a lack of American presence in the international fashion world in the 1940s so she came up with the idea of showcasing American designers during, what she called, Press Week. Due to Lambert’s vision, New York Fashion Week is now recognized as one of the most important annual events in fashion.

The Chic History

NYFW allows the world to see the upcoming trends of the season while also showcasing just how beautiful and artistic clothing can be. Yet before all the glitz and glamour were added, NYFW was known as Press Week. In 1943, a fashion publicist named Eleanor Lambert came up with the idea of a week in eleanorwhich American designers could show their clothes to editors in order to get more American designers in the news and magazines (SmithsonianMag). Lambert coined the event Press Week because it was an opportunity for the press to have inside looks at the upcoming American fashion. Before this event, reporters and editors were not able to write about the fashion in New York without shadowing buyers at their stores (Time). Lambert arranged to have fifty-three designers show their pieces at the Plaza Hotel where all the editors would have a packet of photos and press releases for the specific shows they attended (Time).

The success of Press Week was shown through various magazines praising the American designers and displaying photos from 2009-08-25-sjcf_01_img0292the various shows. Press Week continued to hold fashion shows all throughout the city until 1990 when the Council of Fashion Designers of American, or CFDA, decided that all the shows should be held at the same location (SmithsonianMag). The CFDA chose to hold the shows in two white tents in New York City’s 7-20-first-fashion-week1Bryant Park. In 1994, New York Fashion Week in Bryant Park debuted with resounding success. Mercedes-Benz signed on as a sponsor, changing the name to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (Time). Bryant Park continued to hold Fashion Week there until 2010 when the tents could no longer accommodate the crowds of Fashion Week. Lincoln Center was chosen as the next venue and is still being used today (Time).

This Trendy Year

Oscar 2015
Oscar de la Rentra Spring 2015
MK 2015
Micheal Kors Spring 2015

NYFW has grown from editor-only runway shows to an event that celebrities, buyers, editors, and fashion fanatics all flock to twice a year. The most recent show was held in February 2015 and showed the Spring 2015 trends. There are fifteen notable spring trends including Nixon Era, American Dream, Prima Ballerina, Age of Aquarius, Good Sport, Good Jeans, On the Grid, All that Sash, Fringe Fest, In the Navy, The Long Story, Borrowed from the Bridge, Garden State, Army Issue, and Good Crops (HarpersBazaar). Of course, all these trends would not exist without the designers who create and make collections inspired by them. Because of NYFW, American designers were finally able to make an impression in the fashion-world. Designers like Oscar de la Renta, Micheal Kors, Ralph Lauren, and Zac Posen have all shown collections during NYFW, which has allowed them to be shown to the world.

The Fashionable Future

Staying true to the idea that fashion is ever changing, NYFW is going through major changes itself. The shows from this February are the last that will be shown at the Lincoln Center; however, the newest location of the shows has not yet been released. Along with the change in location, Mercedes-Benz will no longer have any affiliations with the show (Racked). Social media and online media coverage have both helped NYFW grow into the international sensation that it is today, but they have also changed the dynamic of the event. Originally this week was created to show editors the upcoming season’s trends and have them published in magazines for the general public, but now all the collections are published online within hours of the show premiering. The instant access allows the customer to engage with the new trends faster, and therefore mercedesbenzFWrequires magazines to react much more quickly to the trends and customers. Now that the customer is able to see the shows online, whether in pictures or through live feeds, there is concern that the shows are going to become more geared toward pleasing the customer instead of the editors and buyers who actually attend the shows (Racked). The future of NYFW does face challenges in dealing with online coverage and balancing the desire to please the customer while still pleasing editors. Yet Fashion Week still has great things going for it. The CFDA recently purchased the Fashion Calendar, which is the official schedule of all the shows during the week (Racked). Purchasing the calendar is a huge accomplishment for the CFDA because now they have control over when certain designers hold their shows and on what days all the events take place. Previously, the calendar was controlled by one woman, named Ruth Finley, who scheduled everything with pencil and paper. Now the CFDA will be able to translate the calendar onto computers, making it more accessible and easier to manage.

A fashion publicist had an idea and 72 years later, that idea is New York Fashion Week. Eleanor Lambert saw a need for American designers to have a bigger presence in the fashion world, for them to be on the same level as French and Italian designers. The show has grown from being exclusive to editor-only runway shows to 350 shows attended by everyone from Anna Wintour, editor and chief of Vogue magazine, to countless celebrities, to fashion bloggers. This Fashion Week embodies how fashion can be translated from high-end luxury to street style worn by the everyday person. Although the ceremony of the event my seem trivial to some bystanders, the clothes that are featured are seen more as works of art than pieces of fabric sewn together ― thanks to Eleanor Lambert and her one idea.

Is Gluten Free for Me?

Is Gluten Free for Me?

GF-image-300x212Every year there seems to be a new weight loss trend that everyone adopts into their lives without really knowing all the information about the trend. In 2013 and 2014, going gluten free seemed to be that trend. “The gluten-free diet is one of the fastest-growing nutritional movements in America”, but is often associated only with weight loss (NFCA). Grocery stores are now filled with gluten free foods and restaurants report “customers ordered more than two hundred million dishes last year that were gluten- or wheat-free” (The New Yorker). What some people who embraced this diet do not know is that cutting out gluten from diets came around as a treatment for Celiac Disease. Celiac’s is a disease where “the body is attacking itself every time a person with celiac consumes gluten” (NFCA). So is going gluten-free something everyone should do in order to live a healthier life?

The Myth…

In 2011 William Davis, a cardiologist, came out with the book “Wheat Belly” whose tagline is “lose the wheat, lose the weight, and find your path back to health” thus spurring the gluten free madness. After the book came out “nearly twenty million people [contended] twheatbelly-book320hat they regularly experience distress after eating products that contain gluten” (The New Yorker). Before Wheat Belly, gluten free products were very hard to come by as they were mainly only carried in specialty food stores like Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Raisin Rack, or Natural Life. Now, gluten free cookies, pasta, cereals, bread, waffles, and pizza are all easily accessible in most big name supermarkets and are mainly thought of as being the healthier, low calorie choice when it comes to those items. Lots of people associate gluten free foods with weight loss because that is how they are advertised. Unfortunately for those people, the only ones who need to cut gluten from their diets are people with celiac disease or have a gluten intolerance.

According to the Cleveland Clinic “there’s absolutely no evidence that simply getting rid of gluten will result in weight loss”. Gluten is a “protein found in wheat, barley, and rye” and when it is taken out of food it is often “replaced with extra calories and sugars to make up for taste and texture” (Jillian Micheals). The thought that cutting gluten from a diet causes weight loss came from the fact that when people go gluten free they eat healthier in general and cut out the overly processed, starchy foods. When people eliminate gluten from their diets they end up reading nutrition labels more carefully and make overall healthier choices when buying and eating food (The Cleveland Clinic). Gluten itself is found whole grain foods, which when eaten with other healthful foods, can make a nutritious meal. Gluten itself also has “an array of vitamins, minerals, and fiber” that help make up a healthy diet (Jillian Micheals). There are people that do have to cut gluten from their eating habits because of medical conditions.

Myth Busted!

Around “three million Americans have celiac disease, and an estimated 18 million Americans have a sensitivity to gluten” (NFCA). Celiac disease does require, people who have it, to cut gluten from their diets because of the side effects it has on their bodies. The symptoms people can experience can be mild like “fatigue” and “headaches” udisto more severe and troublesome like “diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, and abdominal pain” (NFCA). Having celiac disease involves completely cutting out barley, rye, triticale, and wheat while foods like cake, pie, cereal, wafers, crackers, rice, and gravies should be avoided, but eating them occasionally will not be as detrimental (Mayo Clinic). Although going gluten free is a big lifestyle change, there are plenty of substitute foods that give off the same taste or texture as wheat; these substitutes include quinoa, soy, corn, buckwheat, flax, tapioca, or arrowroot (Mayo Clinic). Even though the popularity of going gluten free came about for the wrong reasons, it has made gluten free foods much more available and easy to find. Speciality food brands like Udi’s, Enjoy Life, Rudi’s, Van’s, and Amy’s, that provide a wide range of gluten free foods, can be found in big grocery shopping chains including Kroger, Meijer, and Giant Eagle. It is still very important to pay attention to the cross-contamination labels on foods because many gluten free labeled foods could still be processed in the same area as foods that do contain it.

Because going gluten free has become more popular, there are more gluten free recipes that still taste good and are appealing to those new to cutting it out. The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness has a whole section of their website dedicated to delicious, gluten free recRudi's gluten-free egg ciabattaipes that people can make at home. They feature a recipe of the week, which is a Rosemary Ciabatta Breakfast Sandwich with Chicken Andouille Sausage. The Ciabatta Rolls are gluten free, but still have the same taste and look of a normal roll. There are also recipe websites that only feature recipes that are gluten free. Two of the best websites I found were Simply Gluten-Free and Gluten-Free Goddess.Carol Kicinski is the author of Simply Gluten-Free, a professional recipe developer, and television chef. She writes her blog with the philosophy of “find[ing] and enjoy[ing] foods that are naturally gluten-free” (Simply Gluten-Free). The gluten-free goddess is written by aGluten-Free-Banana-Walnut-Muffins blogger named Karina who discovered she has a gluten sensitivity in 2001. Ever since her discovery, she was inspired to share the delicious gluten free foods she “actually [cooks] and [craves]” (Gluten-Free Goddess).   Both have a variety of recipes ranging from main dishes to more snack-like items. All three of these sites are wonderful sources for anyone suffering from celiac or a gluten intolerance.

The gluten free lifestyle has been misconstrued as a diet that can be adopted by anyone who wants to shed a few pounds, when in reality it was created to help treat people who suffer from celiac disease or a wheat intolerance. Gluten is often confused with carbohydrates, because they are both found in the same types of food, but really is simply a protein that contains various vitamins and nutrients! For those people who do have celiac, it is very important to follow the gluten free lifestyle in order to get rid of all the symptoms that come with the disease.

This Fabulous Foam

imageThere is nothing worse than having dry, flaky skin except for having an embarrassing blemish appear out of nowhere! Luckily for all the dry skin and blemish sufferers there is the Aveeno Clear Completion Foaming Cleanser. This foam gently cleanses the skin to prevent breakouts using natural soy ingredients. The foam leaves the users face feeling clean and blemish free without an over-drying side effect. For people with dry and sensitive skin, this cleanser could be the one for you.

Features and Benefits

The Aveeno brand takes pride in what they call the Active Naturals that are used in all their products. The Active Naturals are a variety of ingredients, like oats, soy, wheat, feverfew, shiitake, sSoyhouthernwood, lotus, and seaweed, which are used to make their products. Each product highlights a different ingredient and the main feature of the Foaming Cleanser is the Active Naturals soy complex. The soybeans are proven to even the user’s skin tone while reducing any blotchiness or discoloration on the skin as well. The cleanser is also oil free, hypoallergenic, and noncomedogenic. This foam will provide someone’s face with a fresh and gentle cleansing experience while also making the skin look healthy and radiant.

Want It? Here’s Where to Get It!

No matter where someone lives in the world, they will be able to find this cleanser. It is located at a variety of stores ranging from drugstores like CVS or Walgreens to beauty supply stores like Ulta Beauty. Along with being very conveniently located, this cleanser has a reasonable price tag of around $7-8.00. Other cleansers that treat acne and discoloration have prices anywhere from $9-15.00 making the Aveeno foaming cleanser the most reasonable option. Because of the wide availability and small price-tag, this foaming wash is a great option for anyone on a budget, but still wants a quality product that will give them great looking skin.

Foaming Cleanser vs. Cream Cleanser

Along with the foaming cleanser, Aveeno also offers a Clear Complexion Cream Cleanser. Both products use soy as their Active Naturals ingredienimaget; the cream also has salicylic acid in it. The salicylic acid is a recognized acne-fighting feature making the cream better for people prone to acne problems. All the reviews about the cream comment on how acne-free their skin is after using the product and all highly recommend it to anyone who struggles with persistent acne. I have used both the cream and foam and found myself liking the foaming cleanser better. I do not struggle with bad acne and therefore do not need a cleanser that has strong acne-fighting elements, so I preferred the gentle foam wash of the foaming cleanser. Both products make skin even-colored and blemish free, but the cream is a better choice for anyone who has constant acne problems and the foam is the better choice for anyone who just wants a light, gentle cleanser.

My Personal Experience

I have been a personal user of the Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser for about three years and love the product. I have very sensitive skin and struggled to find a cleanser that did not irritate my skin after I would use it, but this foaming wash is gentle enough that I never had any problems. The foam makes the wash gentler then any scrub or cream that I have used while still making my skin bright and blemish free. Sometimes after I use it my face will be a little dry and a have to put moisturizer on, but that happens very occasionally and not enough where I find it to be an annoyance. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who has dry sensitive skin and wants a wash that is gentle, but still a great cleanser.
